I have my degree in Home Economics (now, called Bachelor of science in Food, Nutrition and Health…so much better…i’m just a little bitter) as well as my Secondary Teacher Education degree. Put the two together and you get a Food and Nutrition teacher. My job allows me to educate my students about how their food choices affect no only their health, body and mind, but the environment and countries involved in the production of their choices. I base a large portion of my teaching around food science – it’s not just about having fun and “cooking”. Food and nutrition classes have evolved and grown so much in the past 5 years. Everyday we are bombarded with information (and misinformation) on the newest diet plans, research on trans fats/essential fatty acids/fiber/calories…etc…it’s scary…that’s where i come in. (cue superwoman music)
I generally like to make all my recipes as healthy as possible. My students often complain…”whole wheat flour?…quinoa?….apple sauce instead of fat?…skinless chicken?…Ms. B you ruin food!!!”. But in the end, i’m lucky to have great students that are open to new ideas and embrace change…they just need a little encouragement.
I love to cook and to bake. Corny…but yes, it’s my passion. If i could do it all day long…i would. Dinner parties are my favorite…cooking for my friends and family is the ulitmate! And maybe i’m a little self-absorbed in thinking they love my food.
The recipes in this blog will border between traditional…and more healthy recipes. If you see recipes with refined flour, refined sugar, butter…etc…I’m not eating it, it’s given to my friends and family, hahaha. I do nibble here and there, but I generally like to get as many nutrients as possible from my food…
Ok, enough blabbering…you’re here for the pictures anyway.
